September 23 – The Reward of a Disciplined Life
1 Corinthians 9:25
“Everyone who competes in the
games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last,
but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
SITREP:
What are you training for—and is it something that will
still matter in eternity?
The Apostle Paul wrote these words to the believers in
Corinth, a city well-acquainted with competitive sports like the Isthmian
Games. These athletes were admired for their focus, grit, and the discipline it
took to prepare for victory. Paul didn’t shy away from that comparison. He used
it to challenge believers to approach their faith with the same intensity, but
for a far more lasting prize. He knew what it meant to live with purpose, to
suffer for a cause, and to pour out everything he had in the service of God’s
kingdom. And here, he’s reminding us: don’t just live—train.
Breakdown of the Verse:
"Everyone who competes in the games…" – Paul is
pulling from a world the Corinthians understood. Athletes didn’t show up
unprepared; they lived in strict discipline long before the competition began.
"…goes into strict training." – This is about
controlled choices, pushing limits, staying focused. It’s not casual—it’s
commitment.
"They do it to get a crown that will not last…" –
The victor’s wreath in those days was literal—a woven crown of leaves. It
faded. It dried out. But they gave everything for it.
"…but we do it to get a crown that will last
forever." – Paul shifts the focus. Our reward isn’t temporary honor or
applause. It’s eternal. God promises an everlasting prize for those who live
disciplined, faithful lives.
How This Shapes a Soldier’s Faith:
You’ve trained before. You’ve endured the long days, the
aches, the grind. Not for a leaf crown—but for mission readiness, for life and
death stakes. You’ve put in the work because you believed in what you were
fighting for. Now apply that to your walk with Christ.
Your spiritual readiness matters. Every time you open the
Word, choose prayer over pride, or resist temptation when no one’s watching,
you’re building endurance. You’re training for something eternal. The
battlefield may have changed, but the stakes haven’t. Heaven’s watching. And
the fight you’re in now? It leads to a crown that will never fade.
ENDEX:
This isn’t about showing up strong one day a week. It’s
about living like you’re in it for the long haul. You’ve seen what
undisciplined living does in combat—it costs lives. The same is true in your
faith. You’ve got a race to run, a mission to complete, and a Commander to
please. So train like it.
Wake up with purpose. Engage your faith with intensity.
Sweat it out in the hard places of obedience. Because the prize you’re chasing
isn’t a ribbon or a ribbon rack—it’s the crown of eternal life, handed to you
by the King Himself.
AAR:
What prize are you really chasing—and is your discipline
built to last beyond this life? 1 Corinthians 9:25 makes the cost of victory
clear: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They
do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will
last forever.” Paul isn’t just comparing the Christian life to a race—he’s
reminding you that the crown you’re after isn’t made of metal. It’s eternal.
Your challenge: Examine your daily discipline. Is it aimed at temporary gain,
or eternal reward? If it’s not training you for godliness, it’s wasting your
energy.
Train Like the Prize Is Worth Everything—Because It Is
The world disciplines itself for applause that fades,
trophies that rust, and titles that get replaced. But you’re running for
something eternal. That kind of crown doesn’t come from coasting. It
comes from cutting distractions, crushing excuses, and committing to the race
with everything you’ve got. 1 Corinthians 9:25 calls you to a higher standard—a
soldier-athlete mindset that trains hard because the reward is worth it.
So tighten your grip. Reroute your priorities. The crown doesn’t go to the
fastest—it goes to the faithful. Run like your reward is forever—because it is.
