August 7 – Be Strong and Courageous

Deuteronomy 31:23

"The Lord gave this command to Joshua son of Nun: 'Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.'”

SITREP:

Have you ever received an assignment that felt heavier than your own strength could carry? A task that made you question whether you were the right one for the job? Deuteronomy 31:23 meets every soldier at that crossroads with clear orders: Be strong. Be courageous. And never forget—you are not going in alone.

Breaking Down the Verse:

·         "The Lord gave this command to Joshua son of Nun:" — The orders come straight from the top. God Himself commissions Joshua, not leaving the assignment open to debate.

·         "Be strong and courageous," — Strength and courage are not merely desired traits; they are mandatory marching orders when stepping into a calling from God.

·         "for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath," — The mission is guaranteed success, not because Joshua is flawless, but because God's promise secures the outcome.

·         "and I myself will be with you." — The defining factor isn’t Joshua’s ability; it’s God's unwavering presence. That is the true source of victory.

This moment occurs as Moses is handing off leadership to Joshua—a massive transition at a critical moment. The people are on the edge of the Promised Land, but the battles ahead are real, and the challenges are daunting. Joshua would not succeed through charisma or brute force; he would succeed because God went with him.

How This Strengthens a Soldier’s Faith:

A warrior’s journey is often marked by moments when the next mission seems too vast, too complex, too costly. You might carry the doubts of past failures, the memories of losses, and the scars of old battles. Yet Deuteronomy 31:23 cuts through the noise with this reality: you are called not because you’re the strongest candidate, but because you are willing—and because God is sufficient.

Strength and courage aren't summoned from thin air. They are the result of knowing Who has sent you and Who goes with you. Whether you're leading a team, fighting a personal battle, or forging a new path through uncertain terrain, this verse anchors you. The mission ahead is built on God's promises, not your perfection.

For a combat veteran, this is critical. Your strength may not look the same after every battle. Your courage may have taken some hits. But none of that disqualifies you from your next assignment in God's Kingdom. He calls you still. He strengthens you still. He walks with you still.

When you step forward, you're not moving under your own banner. You carry the orders—and the backing—of the King of Kings.

ENDEX:

You were never meant to accomplish the mission alone. God’s command to Joshua echoes through the centuries to every soldier willing to answer His call today: Be strong. Be courageous. Move forward, knowing the victory is grounded in His presence, not your perfection. You are carrying out a divine mission under divine protection. Shoulder your gear, fix your eyes on the objective, and move out with the boldness of a warrior who knows that the Commander is right beside him.

AAR:

What do you do when God hands you a mission bigger than your confidence? Deuteronomy 31:23 captures that exact moment—Joshua being commissioned by God Himself: “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them, and I myself will be with you.” This wasn’t a motivational pep talk—it was a combat order, backed by divine presence. Joshua wasn’t chosen because he felt ready. He was chosen, then commanded to move forward in strength and courage because God would be with him every step. Your challenge: If God is calling you into something that stretches your limits, stop waiting to “feel ready.” Step in knowing He goes with you.

Courage Isn’t Optional When You’ve Been Called

God doesn’t send you into battle alone—He sends you equipped, commissioned, and covered. When He told Joshua to be strong and courageous, it wasn’t because the mission would be easy—it was because He promised His presence. You might not feel like a leader, a warrior, or a builder of something great—but if God has placed the call, He’s already supplied the strength. Courage isn’t about the absence of fear—it’s about obedience in the face of it. So tighten your grip, raise your head, and go. The mission is set. The Commander is with you. And backing down isn’t part of the orders.
