April 21 – Strength for the Journey
Deuteronomy 31:8 –
"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." (NIV)
SITREP:
What do you do when the road ahead is unclear and the weight of responsibility is heavy? No matter how long or difficult the journey, God walks ahead of you. Take heart and keep moving forward.
This verse was spoken by Moses to Joshua and the people of Israel as they stood on the edge of a new beginning. Moses was handing over leadership to Joshua, who would now lead the people into the Promised Land—a land full of uncertainty, fortified enemies, and unfamiliar terrain.
It was a heavy moment. But Moses didn’t give them a map or a military strategy—he gave them something stronger: a promise. He reminded them that they were not alone. The same God who had led them out of Egypt, parted the Red Sea, and sustained them in the wilderness would now go before them. He wouldn’t just send them into battle—He would lead the charge.
-
“The Lord himself goes before you…” – God doesn’t just show up halfway through the fight—He’s already out in front, clearing the way.
-
“…and will be with you.” – He doesn’t abandon His warriors. He walks beside them.
-
“He will never leave you nor forsake you.” – This is not a temporary deployment—this is eternal backup.
-
“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Courage isn’t about pretending there’s no danger—it’s about trusting the One who goes before you.
How This Applies to a Soldier’s Faith:
Whether in the field or navigating life after service, you know that every mission comes with unknowns. Orders shift. Threats change. Plans break down. But God never does.
-
“The Lord Himself goes before you…”
-
Before a mission, recon teams scout ahead to prepare the way. Spiritually, God is your recon—He’s already been where you’re going.
-
-
“He will be with you…”
-
The best leaders fight alongside their men. God doesn’t send you into the unknown alone—He walks beside you, shoulder to shoulder.
-
-
“He will never leave you nor forsake you…”
-
Some commanders disappear when things get rough. God never retreats. He doesn’t leave you wounded on the battlefield—He carries you when you can’t go any further.
-
-
“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged…”
-
Fear is real. So is doubt. But they don’t define you—faith does. When you know who goes before you, you walk into uncertainty with confidence.
-
ENDEX:
Deuteronomy 31:8 isn’t just encouragement—it’s orders. Keep moving. Keep advancing. God has already stepped into your tomorrow. He’s not waiting for you to figure it out—He’s already making a way.
When fear whispers that you’re not ready, when discouragement tries to take your feet out from under you, remember: God is already there.
Hold your position. Then move forward with confidence. The mission isn’t over. Your Commander is still leading.
