It’s a series — four volumes forged in the fire of military life and sharpened for the soul that refuses to quit. January 23 – The Warrior’s Mindset

Colossians 3:2 – "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

Reflection: A good soldier keeps his focus on the mission. Fix your mind on God’s plan, and let nothing distract you from His purpose.

The book of Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Colossae, a city influenced by false teachings and worldly distractions. The believers there were struggling with staying focused on Christ and eternal values while living in a culture that prioritized material success, status, and earthly desires.

In Colossians 3:2, Paul gives this command:

  • "Set your minds on things above" – Focus on God’s truth, His eternal kingdom, and His purpose rather than being consumed by temporary concerns.
  • "Not on earthly things." – This doesn’t mean neglecting responsibilities, but rather not letting worldly distractions take priority over faith and purpose.

Paul encourages believers to have a soldier-like focus, keeping their eyes on their true mission—serving Christ and seeking eternal rewards.

How This Applies to a Soldier’s Faith

For a soldier, Colossians 3:2 is a reminder to stay mission-focused, both in military duty and in faith. Here’s how this verse applies:

  1. Discipline of the Mind – Staying Focused on the Mission
    • Soldiers are trained to stay sharp, think strategically, and not get distracted.
    • Spiritually, this verse calls soldiers to stay focused on God’s mission, rather than being consumed by temporary struggles or worldly desires.
  2. Keeping an Eternal Perspective
    • Military service is demanding, but earthly struggles are temporary.
    • This verse reminds soldiers that their ultimate purpose is not just military success, but faithfulness to God and His eternal kingdom.
  3. Avoiding Distractions and Temptations
    • Just as soldiers must stay alert and disciplined to avoid enemy traps, believers must guard against temptations that pull them away from faith.
    • Focusing on "things above" means prioritizing righteousness, integrity, and God’s will over worldly distractions.
  4. Faith is the True Battlefield
    • Many soldiers face fear, doubt, and moral struggles.
    • This verse encourages them to shift their mindset to God’s promises, trusting that faith in Christ brings true purpose, peace, and hope beyond this life.

ENDEX

Colossians 3:2 is a soldier’s command to stay mission-ready in faith. It challenges believers to stay focused on God’s purpose, avoiding distractions and worldly entanglements. Just as a soldier must remain alert and disciplined on the battlefield, followers of Christ must keep their minds set on God’s eternal mission—because that is where true victory lies.
