February 22 – Faith Tested in Battle

Judges 7:7 – "The Lord said to Gideon, ‘With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.’"

Reflection: Obedience requires trust, even when it doesn’t make sense. Victory doesn’t come from numbers but from faith in God’s plan.

This verse comes from the story of Gideon, a reluctant warrior whom God called to lead Israel against the Midianites. The Midianites were a powerful enemy, and Gideon initially gathered 32,000 men to fight them. However, God told him that the army was too large—if Israel won with such a big force, they might think they achieved victory on their own strength rather than by God’s power.

God instructed Gideon to reduce his army in two stages:

  1. 22,000 men left because they were afraid (Judges 7:3).
  2. 9,700 more were dismissed after a drinking test—only those who lapped water like a dog were chosen.

In the end, only 300 soldiers remained—but God declared, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.” (Judges 7:7)

Against all odds, Gideon’s 300 men defeated the Midianite army of 135,000, proving that victory comes from God, not human numbers or strength.

How This Applies to a Soldier’s Faith

For a soldier, Judges 7:7 is a powerful reminder that victory does not depend on numbers, strength, or personal ability, but on God’s power. Here’s how this verse applies:

  1. God Wins Battles, Not Man’s Strength
    • Gideon’s army was outnumbered 450 to 1, yet God secured victory.
    • Soldiers may face overwhelming odds, but God’s power is greater than any enemy force.
  2. Quality Over Quantity—God Uses the Faithful
    • God didn’t choose the biggest army; He chose a small, disciplined, and obedient group.
    • In the military and in faith, God works through those who are willing, faithful, and ready to follow His command.
  3. Fear Weakens, But Faith Strengthens
    • The first test removed those who were afraid, showing that fear weakens an army.
    • A soldier’s greatest strength is not just weapons, but faith in God’s protection and leadership.
  4. Victory Comes When We Trust in God’s Plan
    • Gideon had to trust that God’s way, not his own strategy, would bring success.
    • Soldiers must learn to trust in God’s plan, even when it seems unconventional or impossible.

ENDEX

Judges 7:7 is a soldier’s lesson in faith, courage, and obedience. Just as Gideon’s victory was not about numbers but about trust in God, today’s soldiers must remember that strength alone doesn’t determine victory—faith in God does. When God is on your side, even the smallest army can defeat the greatest enemy.
