January 1 – A Soldier’s Call to Courage

 

Joshua 1:9 – "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Reflection: As a soldier, you are called to strength and courage. Fear has no place in your heart, for God goes with you into every battle. Stand firm in His command.

Joshua 1:9 is a powerful verse spoken by God directly to Joshua, the newly appointed leader of Israel. The Israelites had just completed their long journey through the wilderness after being freed from Egypt, and they were about to enter the Promised Land, a land full of enemies and challenges.

Moses, their long-time leader, had passed away, and now Joshua was tasked with leading an entire nation into battle, conquering strongholds, and claiming the land God had promised. Understandably, this was a massive responsibility, and fear and doubt could easily creep in.

To reassure Joshua, God commands him—not just encourages him—to be strong and courageous. This wasn’t merely an emotional pep talk. It was a divine directive, backed by the promise that God would be with him wherever he went.

How This Applies to a Soldier’s Faith

For a soldier, Joshua 1:9 speaks to the heart of military service. Just as Joshua was stepping into unknown and dangerous territory, soldiers face situations that demand courage, resilience, and trust in God. Here’s how it applies:

1. Facing Fear with Faith
   Soldiers experience fear—whether in battle, during missions, or in life’s uncertainties. This verse is a reminder that courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear but rather trusting that God goes before them.

   God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous. This means that bravery is a choice of faith, not just a feeling. Soldiers are called to step forward despite fear, trusting in God’s presence.
3. Endurance Under Pressure
   Military life involves physical, emotional, and spiritual battles. Joshua’s mission wasn’t a short-term fight; it required endurance. Soldiers are often called to keep moving forward, knowing that God provides strength even in exhaustion.

   Just as God assured Joshua that He would be with him wherever he goes, soldiers can hold onto the truth that they are never alone. Whether in the trenches, on deployment, or struggling with the scars of war, God walks beside them.
